Every few years, I have a group of students who struggle to recall notes on the musical staff. So, this year, I decided to make the process of learning/memorizing notes more fun!
What is it?
It is a Google Slides presentation. Each slide indicates a specific instrument and provides a series of notes on the musical staff. The belt levels are also indicated on each slide.
What do I do?
Ask the students to take their time reading the notes (maybe even air play a few times), then play what they see on the slide!
Now what?
The first student to successfully play the notes on the slide correctly, wins a special 'Martial Arts Huzza'!
You should keep track of the students who receive the special huzza - if a student accumulates 10 huzza's, they get to be entered into a random prize pool (of your choosing)
Each student should demonstrate that they can play the notes before moving on to the next slide
How do I Keep Track?
Have students keep track of their own levels by printing out (or sharing digitally) this 'belt level' document. Each level has its own challenge, with the White Belt level being the easiest. Once you have given the 'okay', students can mark each level they have passed. Students can turn the belt level document in for credit.
